Emil Nolde German, 1867–1956
Red-Haired Girl
1919
Emil Nolde's 'Red-Haired Girl' ('Rothaariges Mädchen', c. 1919) is a searing portrait by the German Expressionist: the sitter's flame-red hair and emerald ground are rendered in heavy, chalky strokes of saturated colour that are Nolde's signature. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
