Gustave Courbet's 'Madame L... (Laure Borreau)' (c. 1863) is a half-length portrait of the actress Laure Borreau by the leader of French Realism. Courbet's direct, almost confrontational gaze at his sitter, the solid modelling, and the rich black of her dress exemplify the painter's reworking of traditional portraiture in a Realist idiom. The oil on fabric is at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
