Henri Rousseau (French, 1844–1910)
Fight Between a Tiger and a Buffalo
1908
Henri Rousseau's 'Fight between a Tiger and a Buffalo' (c. 1908) is one of his fantastical jungle scenes: a tiger and a water buffalo locked in mid-combat amid densely layered vegetation, under a theatrical band of sky. A Paris customs officer who never visited the tropics, Rousseau built his jungles from Jardin des Plantes greenhouse plants, illustrated books, and the Jardin d'Acclimatation menagerie — and produced some of the most original Naïve paintings of the early 20th century. The work is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
