Honoré Daumier (French, 1808–1879)
The Troubadour
c. 1868–1873
Honoré Daumier's 'The Troubadour' is a small, warmly painted oil by the 19th-century French caricaturist — a travelling musician in a slightly worn costume, absorbed in his own song. Daumier, best known for his political lithographs, also left around 300 paintings that anticipate the sympathetic social realism of Millet and Courbet. This example, oil on fabric, is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
