John Constable (British, 1776–1837)
Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead
1828
John Constable's 'Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead' (c. 1828), an oil sketch on canvas, captures one of the ponds on Hampstead Heath that Constable haunted for the fleeting atmospheric effects he pursued obsessively in his late years. Clouds billow across a wide sky; gorse and heath slope down to the water; the brushwork has the loose spontaneity of the great late sketches that so influenced Delacroix. Cleveland Museum of Art.
