Arnold Böcklin (Swiss, 1827–1901)
Ruin by the Sea
1881
Arnold Böcklin's 'Ruins by the Sea' (late 19th century) is a Symbolist landscape by the Swiss painter best known for 'Isle of the Dead'. A classical temple, shattered against a grey Mediterranean horizon, presides over an elegiac scene that echoes Böcklin's lifelong meditations on mortality, myth, and the weight of antiquity. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
