Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903)
Edge of the Woods Near L'Hermitage, Pontoise
1879
Camille Pissarro's 'Edge of the Woods near L'Hermitage, Pontoise' (c. 1879) is a characteristic landscape from Pissarro's years at Pontoise north-west of Paris, where he helped Cézanne consolidate his touch. Dabs of muted olive, ochre, and slate build a subtle patchwork of woodland and field — the disciplined, slightly melancholic Impressionism that distinguishes Pissarro from Monet. The oil on fabric hangs at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
