The Young Eastern Woman

1838

Friedrich von Amerling (1803–1887), one of Vienna's leading Biedermeier portraitists, painted this 'Young Oriental Woman' in the 1830s as an example of his fashionable Romantic-Orientalist subjects. The sitter's richly patterned headdress, the soft porcelain skin, and the limpid sidelong gaze typify the taste of Metternich-era Vienna for exotic female character heads. The oil on fabric is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
