The Age of Bronze

Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917)

The Age of Bronze

1875–76

A lifetime bronze of Auguste Rodin's 'The Age of Bronze' ('L'Âge d'airain', 1877), the life-size male nude whose extreme naturalism was so startling at its debut that Rodin was falsely accused of casting the figure directly from life. The figure's tense musculature and ambiguous pose established Rodin's claim to the future of European sculpture. The Cleveland cast is one of several authorised bronzes issued before and after Rodin's death.
