Wrestlers in a Circus
1909
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's 'Circus Wrestlers' (1909–1910) belongs to the early works of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, whose painters frequented the circus and cabaret venues of Dresden. Two muscled wrestlers grapple on a glaring yellow ring under artificial lights, the figures outlined in the rough, angular colour of early Brücke painting. Oil on canvas, Cleveland Museum of Art.
