Paul Cezanne (French, 1839–1906)
The Pigeon Tower at Bellevue
c. 1890
Paul Cézanne's 'Dovecote at Bellevue' (c. 1888–1892) depicts the small Provençal estate near Aix belonging to his sister's in-laws, where Cézanne frequently painted. The pale walls of the farm buildings and the square pigeon-house are broken down into the angular, firmly stacked colour-planes that would decisively shape Cubism a generation later. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
