Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775–1851)
The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16 October 1834
1835
J.M.W. Turner painted 'The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16 October 1834' from eyewitness observation in watercolour on the banks of the Thames the night of the fire that destroyed the old Palace of Westminster. The Cleveland canvas, one of several oil versions, transforms the inferno into a blaze of yellow, orange, and red that all but consumes the architecture — a landmark of his late atmospheric style. Oil on canvas, Cleveland Museum of Art.
