Paul Gauguin (French, 1848–1903)
The Call
1902
Paul Gauguin's 'The Call' ('L'Appel', 1902), painted in the Marquesas Islands in the last year of the artist's life, depicts two Polynesian women pausing on a forest path as if summoned by an unseen voice. The flattened silhouettes and saturated, non-naturalistic colour are characteristic of Gauguin's late Polynesian synthesis. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
