William Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825–1905)
Rest
1879
William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 'Repose' ('Le Repos') is a polished example of the late-19th-century French academic master's idealised female figures: a young peasant woman reclines against a classical background in a tightly finished, porcelain-smooth surface. Immensely fashionable in his day, Bouguereau's heroic women became symbols of the Salon tradition that the Impressionists rebelled against. The oil on fabric is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
