John Linnell (British, 1792–1882)
Noah: The Eve of the Deluge
1848
John Linnell's 'Noah: The Eve of the Deluge' (1848) is a mystical landscape by the English Romantic painter, friend and patron of William Blake. Under a looming storm sky, the ark and the tiny figure of Noah wait for the flood that is about to destroy the world. The sombre, prophetic mood and dense atmospheric brushwork are typical of Linnell's late biblical landscapes, held here by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
