Édouard Vuillard (French, 1868–1940)
Under the Trees (from "The Public Gardens")
1894
Édouard Vuillard's 'Under the Trees (In the Public Gardens)' (c. 1894) belongs to a decorative cycle in which the Nabi painter depicted Parisian mothers and children at leisure in the Tuileries and Luxembourg gardens. Painted in distemper on fabric — the matte, frescolike medium Vuillard favoured for his interior-like outdoor panels — it is a characteristic example of 1890s French decorative intimism.
