Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757–1822)
Terpsichore Lyran (Muse of Lyric Poetry)
1816
Antonio Canova's marble 'Terpsichore Lyran (Muse of Lyric Poetry)' (c. 1812) depicts the Greek muse of lyric song and dance holding her lyre in an elegant contrapposto, a refined Neoclassical response to ancient sources. The Italian master's serene, polished surface and idealised proportions define the period's taste. The sculpture is a centrepiece of the Cleveland Museum of Art's 19th-century European galleries.
