Apollo, God of Light, Eloquence, Poetry, and the Fine Arts with Urania, Muse of Astronomy

1798

Charles Meynier's 'Apollo, God of Light, Eloquence, Poetry, and the Fine Arts, with the Muse Urania' (1798) is a major Neoclassical allegory by the French painter, originally designed for the Louvre palace's ceremonial ceiling programme. Apollo and his astronomy muse are arranged amid clouds in a coolly ideal composition carrying the Enlightenment's fusion of the sciences and the arts. It is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
