Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ (French, 1842–1923)
A Eunuch's Dream
1874
Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ's 'The Eunuch's Dream' (1874) is an archetypal Orientalist painting: a Black palace eunuch dozes in the antechamber of a harem, wreathed in incense and the dream-like apparition of white odalisques above him. Exhibited with great success at the Paris Salon, the picture is a textbook example of 19th-century French academic Orientalism, today held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
