Édouard Vuillard (French, 1868–1940)
Café Wepler
c. 1908–10, reworked in 1912
Édouard Vuillard's 'Café Wepler' (1908–1910) depicts the great Parisian café on Place de Clichy that was a favourite of Vuillard and the Nabi circle. Faces and gas-lit mirrors dissolve into the painter's signature soft patchwork of strokes, capturing the sociability and hum of early 20th-century Parisian café life. The oil on fabric is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
