Paul Cezanne (French, 1839–1906)
The Brook
c. 1895–1900
Paul Cézanne's 'The Brook' (c. 1879–1882), painted in his native Provence, is an austerely composed landscape in which a thin stream winds between dense, angular patches of forest greens and ochres. The canvas catches Cézanne mid-career, consolidating the blocky colour-planes that would become the foundation of his mature landscape. Oil on fabric; Cleveland Museum of Art.
