Louis Hersent (French, 1777–1860)
Sophie Crouzet
c. 1801
Louis Hersent's portrait of Sophie Kruse (early 19th century) is a polished example of the French Neoclassical portrait tradition — the sitter shown in half-length, her costume precisely observed, her direct gaze conveying the sober dignity of the Empire and early Restoration society. Painted in oil on fabric and now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the work is a refined example of Hersent's Parisian portrait practice around 1810–1820.
