Gustave Courbet (French, 1819–1877)
Panoramic View of the Alps, Les Dents du Midi
1877
Gustave Courbet's 'Panoramic View of the Alps, Les Dents du Midi' (c. 1877) is a late landscape painted during Courbet's exile in Switzerland after his involvement in the Paris Commune. A broad sweep of glacier-cut peaks rises across the horizontal canvas, painted with his characteristic palette-knife passages and muscular realism. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
