Berthe Morisot with a Muff

Édouard Manet (French, 1832–1883)

Berthe Morisot with a Muff

c. 1871–72

Édouard Manet's 'Berthe Morisot with a Muff' (1868–1869) is one of a series of intimate portraits the painter made of the Impressionist Berthe Morisot, whom he painted no fewer than twelve times. The muted blacks and the sitter's steady, intelligent gaze testify to the close artistic and personal relationship between them. Oil on canvas, Cleveland Museum of Art.
