Jean-Charles Cazin (French, 1841–1901)

The Boatyard

c. 1875

Jean-Charles Cazin's 'The Shipyard' (late 19th century) is a characteristic Naturalist landscape by the French painter admired by the Impressionists and Symbolists alike. A quiet stretch of the Boulogne waterfront at dusk, with small craft moored along the quay, is rendered in Cazin's restrained grey-and-lavender palette. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
