Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917)

Heroic Head of Pierre de Wissant, One of the Burghers of Calais

1886

A bronze study for Auguste Rodin's 'Pierre de Wiessant', one of the six figures of 'The Burghers of Calais' (1884–1889). Wiessant is shown alone, his body bent in grief and defiance as he prepares, with the other hostages, to surrender the city's keys to Edward III. Cast posthumously under the Rodin Museum's authorised editions and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
