Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884–1920)
Portrait of a Woman
c. 1917–18
Amedeo Modigliani's 'Portrait of a Woman' (early 1910s) is characteristic of the Italian painter's sinuously elongated figures in the School of Paris. The sitter's swan-like neck, almond eyes, and smoothly simplified oval face merge the influence of African masks with the linear grace of Siennese painting. Held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is a typical example of Modigliani's brief, incandescent career in prewar Paris.
