Villerville Seen from Le Ratier

1855

Charles-François Daubigny's 'Villerville seen from Le Ratier' (c. 1855–1870) is a characteristic Barbizon-school coastal landscape by the painter whose floating studio-boat, the 'Botin', let him work directly on the motif. Quiet sea, low cliffs, and a single sailing boat are rendered in loose, tonal brushwork that was a direct precedent for early Impressionism. The oil on fabric is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
