Ernest Meissonier (French, 1815–1891)
A Painter
1855
Ernest Meissonier's 'The Painter' (c. 1861) is a jewel-like small oil on mahogany in which the French academic master depicts an artist at his easel in a sumptuously appointed studio. The microscopic precision of brocade, armour, and paintbrushes was the quality for which Meissonier was paid extraordinary prices during his lifetime. The panel is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
