Paul Lafond and Alphonse Cherfils Examining a Painting

Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917)

Paul Lafond and Alphonse Cherfils Examining a Painting

c. 1878–80

Edgar Degas's 'Paul Lafond and Alphonse Cherfils Examining a Painting' (c. 1878–1880) shows two of Degas's close friends and fellow collectors absorbed in looking at a canvas propped against a wall, seen from behind in a deliberately informal composition. A companion piece to Degas's great portrait studies of the Parisian art world, the oil on wood panel is a rare 'behind-the-scenes' picture of late 19th-century collecting. Held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
