Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (Austrian, 1793–1865)
Countess Széchenyi
1828
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller's 'Countess Széchenyi' (c. 1830s) is a portrait by the great Biedermeier master of Vienna: the Hungarian aristocrat seated in a precisely observed interior, her silk gown and jewellery rendered with Waldmüller's porcelain-smooth realism. The painter was renowned for his uncompromising naturalism, which influenced later 19th-century Austrian realism. The oil on fabric is at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
