Lion on the Watch

c. 1885

Jean-Léon Gérôme's 'A Lion on the Watch' (c. 1885) is a carefully observed study of a lion by the leading French academic Orientalist, who travelled repeatedly to North Africa and the Middle East in the 1860s–1880s. The quiet, intense watchfulness of the animal was one of Gérôme's lifelong subjects. Oil on wood panel, Cleveland Museum of Art.
