Henri Fantin-Latour (French, 1836–1904)
Tannhäuser
1886
Henri Fantin-Latour's 'Tannhäuser' (late 1880s–early 1890s) translates Wagner's opera into a dreamy allegorical painting — the knight Tannhäuser drawn between earthly love and spiritual salvation, rendered in Fantin-Latour's characteristic hazy, pastel-toned visionary idiom. Deeply involved with the late 19th-century French Wagnerian revival, Fantin-Latour painted numerous lithographs and canvases on the composer's operas. The oil is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
