Ernest Meissonier (French, 1815–1891)
On a Terrace
1867
Ernest Meissonier's 'On the Terrace' is a typical example of the 19th-century French academic master's meticulous, almost photographic small-scale cabinet painting. A pair of gentlemen take the air on a villa terrace beneath a patch of Italian sky — the architecture, silverware, and costume rendered with the microscopic precision that made Meissonier enormously expensive in his day. The oil-on-wood panel is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
