Old Woman

c. 1923–24

Chaim Soutine's 'Old Woman' is a searing character study by the Lithuanian-born Paris painter (1893–1943) — an elderly sitter rendered in thickly loaded, almost battered strokes of earthy brown, crimson, and white, features distorted by the artist's nervous paint-handling into a psychologically lacerating portrait. A key example of the School of Paris's Expressionist pole, the canvas is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
