Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903)
The Lock at Pontoise
1872
Camille Pissarro's 'The Lock at Pontoise' (1872) depicts the river lock on the Oise in the village where Pissarro painted alongside Cézanne in the formative years of Impressionism. Fresh weather, cool colour, and a simple geometric arrangement of water, sky, and low buildings show Pissarro's disciplined calm at the heart of the Impressionist experiment. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
