Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917)
The Thinker (Cleveland cast)
1880–1881
A lifetime bronze of Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker' (Le Penseur), cast from the model Rodin originally conceived around 1880–1882 as the seated figure of Dante atop the 'Gates of Hell'. Enlarged from 1904 onward and serialised in bronze editions, the Cleveland cast is one of several on American museum grounds, anchoring the Cleveland Museum of Art's 19th- and early 20th-century French sculpture display.
