Antoine-Jean Gros (French, 1771–1835)
c. 1800
Antoine-Jean Gros's 'Egyptian Family (Study for the Battle of the Pyramids)' (c. 1810) is a preparatory study for Gros's monumental 'Battle of the Pyramids' (1810). Gros accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in spirit if not in person; the fleeing Egyptian family in the foreground of his battle piece is developed here with sympathetic Orientalist attention. Oil on linen, Cleveland Museum of Art.
