Glaucus and Nydia
1867
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's 'Glaucus and Nydia' (1867) draws on Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1834 novel 'The Last Days of Pompeii': the Athenian youth Glaucus sits beside the blind flower-girl Nydia amid a carefully reconstructed Roman interior. The picture is a textbook example of Victorian antiquarian painting, oil on wood panel, Cleveland Museum of Art.
