Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917)
Stefanina Primicile Carafa, Marchioness of Cicerale and Duchess of Montejasi
c. 1875
Edgar Degas's 'Stefanina Primicile Carafa, Marchesa di Cicerale, and Her Daughter' (c. 1875) is a carefully observed portrait of the Neapolitan noblewoman and her young daughter. Painted in the muted silvery-grey palette of Degas's society portraits, it combines Ingres-like draughtsmanship with the modern informality of his Impressionist portraiture. Oil on fabric, Cleveland Museum of Art.
