Maurice Denis (French, 1870–1943)
The Orange Christ
1889
Maurice Denis's 'The Orange Christ' ('Le Christ orange', 1890) is an early Nabi painting by the French Symbolist that turns the Crucifixion into a field of warm terracotta and orange. Denis's famous 1890 dictum — 'a picture is essentially a flat surface covered with colours in a certain order' — finds direct expression here. Oil on board, Cleveland Museum of Art.
