Henri-Edmond Cross (French, 1856–1910)
The Pink Cloud
c. 1896
Henri-Edmond Cross's 'The Pink Cloud' ('Le Nuage rose', c. 1896) is a luminous Neo-Impressionist landscape of the southern French coast near Saint-Clair — a single rose-coloured cloud drifting above a lavender sea, rendered in the meticulous divided brushstrokes of pointillism. Cross, with Paul Signac, carried Seurat's method into the new century; the painting is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
