Henry Raeburn (Scottish, 1756–1823)
Portrait of Hugh Hope
c. 1810
Sir Henry Raeburn's 'Portrait of Hugh Hope' (c. 1810) is a Scottish Enlightenment portrait by the pre-eminent Edinburgh portraitist, who developed a fresh, directly painted alla-prima style. The Edinburgh lawyer is seen half-length in a dark coat, the brushwork looser than anything in English portraiture of the period. Oil on canvas, Cleveland Museum of Art.
