Francisco de Goya (Spanish, 1746–1828)
Portrait of Don Juan Antonio Cuervo
1819
Francisco de Goya's 'Portrait of Don Juan Antonio Cuervo' (1819) depicts the Spanish neoclassical architect seated at a table with a drafting compass and plans, in one of Goya's most restrained late portraits. The sober grey and black palette and the sitter's solemn dignity reflect the disillusioned Spain of the artist's final years. Oil on canvas, Cleveland Museum of Art.
