The Chair (Round Chair)
1949
Designed by the Danish master Hans J. Wegner in 1949, 'The Chair' (originally the Round Chair, PP501/503) reduces a chair to its essentials: a curved, uninterrupted top rail that becomes the armrests, a gently sculpted seat, and four slender tapered legs. Its immediate fame was cemented when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon sat on it during the 1960 U.S. presidential debate, earning the nickname 'The Chair'. Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen holds one of the world's largest Wegner collections and presents the original series permanently.
