Arne Jacobsen
Ant Chair
1952
Arne Jacobsen's 'Ant Chair' (Model 3100, 1952) is a stackable wooden chair moulded from a single sheet of plywood and balanced on three thin steel legs; its silhouette recalls an ant, which gave it its name. Designed for the cafeteria of the Novo Nordisk factory, the pared-down ergonomic form and mass-manufacture logic established the identity of mid-century Scandinavian design. The model is permanently displayed at Designmuseum Danmark; Jacobsen's 1955 'Series 7' expansion of the design became the best-selling chair in the world.
