Apollo Granting Phaeton Permission to Drive the Chariot of the Sun
c. 1695
Johann Michael Rottmayr's 'Apollo Permits Phaeton to Drive the Sun Chariot' (c. 1700) is an Austrian High-Baroque allegory. The god grants his son the fatal boon — a warning against youthful pride — rendered in Rottmayr's swirling ceiling-painting idiom. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
