Fragment of Figural Jar in the Form of a Figure, Possibly Ai-Apec

Moche North coast

Fragment of Figural Jar in the Form of a Figure, Possibly Ai-Apec

100 BCE–500 CE

A fragment of a Moche figural stirrup-spout vessel from the north coast of Peru (c. AD 100–700), preserving the head and upper torso modelled as the god Ai-apaec or a warrior-priest. The naturalistic facial features typical of Moche 'portrait' ceramics place the shard in the Art Institute of Chicago's ancient Andean collection as a reference piece.
