Leonardo da Vinci
Ginevra de' Benci
c. 1474–1478
The only Leonardo da Vinci painting in the Americas, this portrait depicts Ginevra de' Benci, a young Florentine woman. The juniper tree (ginepro in Italian) behind her is a visual pun on her name. Leonardo's revolutionary use of atmospheric perspective and his sfumato technique—soft, smoky transitions between colors—mark this as a groundbreaking work of the early Renaissance.
