The Alba Madonna
c. 1510
One of the finest High Renaissance tondo (circular) paintings, Raphael's Alba Madonna depicts the Virgin Mary seated on the ground in a landscape, holding the Christ Child and young John the Baptist. The circular composition creates a sense of harmony and balance, while the landscape stretches into atmospheric perspective behind the figures. This painting is considered one of Raphael's greatest achievements.
